Gift Bag with Burlap Ribbon - Step by Step Tutorial

Hi everyone! Happy fathers day and hope you have or are having a lovely day! If you missed my fathers day post last week you can check it out here.

In todays tutorial I wanted to show you how to make this gorgeous bag. I actually saw this on Deb Valder's youtube channel and immediately wanted to recreate it.
You can check out her youtube channel here. She makes some beautiful things so definitely take a look!

I love the soft curves around the bag and the burlap ribbon. You could make this bag for either male or female and a wide range of occasions. You would just need to change up the designer paper and embellishments.

It's the perfect size to fit so many different gifts from chocolates to aftershave or you could even fill it up with loads of small goodies for a little ones birthday.

It's so quick and easy to make so if you have a busy month with birthdays or other occasions you could always make some of these to give out all of your gifts whilst still adding that personal touch!

If you want to find out how to make this bag then keep reading!

What you will need:
- Four pieces of designer paper, two cut 7" x 7 1/2" and the other two 3 1/2" x 6"
- Scoring board
- Double sided adhesive
- 36" of burlap ribbon
- Flower embellishment - one of my daughters had fake flowers so I just spray painted it the colour I wanted it to be
- Four pieces of card stock cut to 1/2" x 5"

Steps:

1) The first thing you need to do is cut four pieces of designer paper. Two of the pieces need to be 7" x 7/12" and the other two need to be 3 1/2" x 6". You need to cut them so the top of the paper (the pattern is going in the right direction/the right way up) so its the 7" on the bigger pieces and the 3 1/2" on the smaller.
2) Then you will need to place one of the bigger pieces onto a scoring board - the top of the paper on the left - with the 7 1/2" side across the top and score at 5". Then turn the paper 90 degrees with the 2 1/2" section at the bottom and score below the first scoreline made at 1/2" on the left and right (so at 1/2" and 6 1/2"). Repeat the same on the other large piece.
3) Then on the smaller pieces place them with the 6" scoreline at the top - again top of the paper on the left - and score at 5". Again turning the paper 90 degrees with the scoreline on the bottom half, score 1/2" on the left and right (so at 1/2" and 3").
4) On all four pieces you will have two small rectangle on the bottom left and right. You will need to remove all eight rectangles and fold and burnish your scorelines.
5) Now you will need to apply some sticky strips on all of the pieces. On one of the larger pieces apply two strips to the flap on the bottom - on the side with the pattern. You can leave the other large piece without any sticky strips. On the two smaller pieces place some on the tab on the side with the pattern and two on either side on the bigger rectangle on the blank side. The two smaller pieces will have the same sticky strips. Hopefully the picture below will make it easier to understand this.

6) To stick the two bigger pieces together remove the plastic off the sticky strip and stick the other flap - without sticky strips. You will need to get this as even as possible so take your time doing this. The two overlapping flaps will be the bottom of your bag.

7) Turn the pieces over from step six and take one of the smaller pieces. Stick the smaller tab onto the bottom of the bag so the scoreline levels out with the two pieces of either side.

8) Repeat step 7 on the other side with the other smaller piece. It should look like the picture below so far

9) You now have the base of the bag done so we can start to put it together. Ordinarily you would fold the bag to create sharp corner seams on all four corners but we are going to do to the opposite of that today. To put the corners together simply remove the plastic from the sticky strip and pinch it together with the edge next to it. Repeat the same on all four corner to create soft bends all around the bag

10) I wanted to add something to the corners to add something extra into it so I cut four pieces of card stock - 1/2" x 5" - and folded then in half. Then just add some adhesive and attach to all four corners.

11) Finally cut 36" of burlap ribbon and add half to each side of the bag plus any embellishments you would like to add.

I absolutely love how it turned out and I can't believe how easy it was too. You just have to make sure  you stick it together as evenly as possible but once you have that down you will be whipping these up in no time at all!

As I said you could make these to suit to anyone for an occasion and they would look amazing. I am just in love with the burlap ribbon - I think it makes it look unique.

I also feel that how you put it together somehow gives it that extra room so you can fill it up with even more goodies for your loved ones!

I really hope you enjoyed todays tutorial and I would love to hear if you any requests for future posts.
