I recently was asked by my aunt to make her a travellers notebook insert because she had seen a few other I had done. I was more than happy to do that for her and I wanted to show you my new method of making them. If you want to see one I made for my niece then check out this post here.
I have discovered an easy method of binding the book I make which obviously keeps the paper from the falling out. It also gives me a lot more room to decorate exactly how I want! If you've been reading my post for a while you will know how much of a fan I am of Cori @ The Reset Girl. I've seen multiple videos of her where she decorates inserts and it's definitely one of my favourite things to do now!
Also you may not one but we won a giveaway on Instagram! Stay to the end of the post if you want a little look at what won.
Here how I make my inserts now.
I first grab some thick card stock, any colour, and cut it to 10" x 8 1/4". I like to make mine wider than the average size but you can adjust this to fit your needs. I went for white on this occasion for a cleaner look but you can also something like kraft card stock
I also take some letter/printer paper, and cut anywhere between 6-10 pages to 9 5/8" x 8 1/4". The reason I make these slightly shorter is so they don't stick out the side of the book. I actually found it easier to cut the paper when it folded in half and I used an x-acto knife with a metal ruler to cut my paper
I then scored at card stock at 5" with the long side at the top and cut in half. Also fold all your paper in half. This is optional but I rounded all my corners on both the paper and card
Place all the pieces of paper inside the card and keep in place with some binder clips. Then take a piercing tool and poke one hole in the middle, one hole 1 1/2 inches from the top and another 1 1/2" from the bottom
Take some twine or thick string around twice the height of your book and a reasonable thick needle
To bind your book together is very simple. If you want the knot to be on the inside then thread your needle through the middle hole from the inside, don't pull it all the way through. Then thread the needle through the bottom hole to the inside of the book, be sure not to pull too tight. Then thread your needle through the final hole to the front of the book. To finish thread your need again through the middle hole from the front of the book to the inside. You should have a piece of thread on each side of the thread you have going straight from the bottom whole to the top. Simply tie these two pieces of string in a knot and cut off any excess. I hope this is easy to follow. There are many great tutorials on youtube to show you different ways of doing this!
Now to the fun part! Decorating your book! The way I like to do this is I go through all my supplies and pull out pieces I think I want to use. I first decide on what colour/patterned paper I want to use. Sometimes I chose to cover the whole front and back but with the white card I like to leave a little border. I just cut the paper so it will fit on the page, not going all the way to the centre as I will be putting some washi down anyway. I don't measure precisely, I just mark it out with a pencil. It won't matter if both pieces are the same size - width wise - because the washi will cover it.
I also round two of the corners on my paper to mirror the corners on my book
I cover the centre with a few pieces of washi tape. I love to experiment with this part and chose patterns and textures that really pop.
I then go through my die cuts, punched out circles, journalling cards and stickers and try so many different things. This is by far my personal favourite part. I love mixing different patterns and using colours that really stand out. Even just using circles I think really makes for a cute decoration.
You may not know but we recently won a giveaway on Instagram from two lovely people who are happy crafts and monetpeach on Instagram. I wanted to show you what we got! They were so kind to actually send a few bits for my daughter Brooke as well! She got some stickers, colouring pencils, a paint book and an acrylic butterfly to paint! We also got some alpha stickers - my FAVOURITE! - some embellishment pieces, buttons, hearts beads, some gift tag and also an adult colouring book. I love the range of pieces we got and I really want to thank the kind people who took their time to get all of these things for us. The first time either of us have ever won anything!
I really hope you enjoyed this post and I apologise for how it's going up. We don't usually share personal things on the blog but my younger sister - Susans youngest daughter - is heading off to university tomorrow. It's been an emotional few days and I can't believe how grown up she is now! I'm so incredibly proud of her and I hope she has an amazing time there.
Thanks so much reading this post. Really hope you enjoyed it. Me and Susan have been craft shopping a lot lately to get supplies for future posts!
