In Depth Birthday Card For Beginners! - Step By Step Tutorial

Hey everyone and welcome back to Sukilu Crafts! How was your Easter? I loved spending it with my family.

In todays post I wanted to share with you an in-depth tutorial on how you can make a simple birthday card. I will explain ways you can change it to suit different people or even different occasions! It's so simple to do so if you are just starting out with crafting or making your own cards then this is the tutorial for you!

As you can see it's definitely a simplistic card but it still has detail to it. This is very easy to create and it looks like you have spent ages on it when really it takes no time at all!

If you want to find out how you can create your own then just keep reading.

Steps:

So for a beginner I would suggest starting off with a square card. In my opinion its much easier to do this as you only have to measure one side to work out what other sizes you need for different layers. When making your card base for a square card you can use a simple formula. x" x 2x" scored at x". So basically if you wanted to make a 6" square card your card base would be 6" x 12" scored at 6". As long as your remember this then you can easily create any size card you would like.

Next thing to do is deciding what you would like to put on your card. One way you can do this is simply stamping on some pictures and a sentiment and that's it. Very often Danielle will make a card with her daughter Brooke and she just add some stamps, her cards always come out lovely!

Another way to decorate your card is by adding designer paper (dsp). You can buy these in your local crafts stores, I even have some I got free in a magazine! I will be showing you this way today! You can stick with one piece of dsp but I wanted to show you how you can use two!

Once you have decided what two papers you want you need to cut them to the correct size. First decide which is your bottom layer and which is your top. This is where you can personalise you suit whoever you are giving it to! You can even get papers which are perfect for different occasions. Once you have decided which is your bottom layer you should cut this one first. People usually tend to have either a 1/8", 1/4" or sometimes 1/2" border between their bottom layer of dsp and their card base. As I mentioned earlier doing this one squares is so much easier as you can just cut both sides to the same size and you are good to go. Once you have decided what size border you would like then you can cut your card.

If you would like a 1/4" border for example you would cut your card 1/2" smaller than your card base. e.g if you have a 6" x 6" square card base and the next layer has a 1/4" border you would cut it 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". Once you cut your piece then just lay it on top to make sure you are happy with it.

If you do decide to go for two different papers then you just need to repeat the previous step but compare it to the layer under it. You don't have to use the same size border as you did for the bottom layer. I can do another post about pairing designer papers if you would like! Comment down below.

This is optional but something I frequently do and this is rounding corners. You can buy corner rounders again from local craft suppliers or even online! I like playing with around with where I put my rounded corners but you can simply round them all if you are unsure!

Now to start building your card! I would highly recommend using some form of liquid adhesive if you are a beginner as it gives you much wiggle room. My favourite one to use in Tombow. You could also use a pritt stick which will work just as well, the triangular one from Ranger is amazing!

Take your time and add each layer to your card making it as centre as possible. I sometimes find myself standing up so I can get a better view.

The next thing you need to do is to add your sentiment. There are many different ways you could this this. You can stamp your sentiment onto some card stock and punch/cut it out or you can use a die cut. You can sometimes buy sentiments already cut out or you use a big shot to create your own. This is where you would cater your card to the correct sentiment.
