DIY Lantern - Step by Step Tutorial

Hey everyone!

Welcome to another step by step tutorial.

In todays post I wanted to show you an amazing way you can create a safe decorative lantern. I have done another post previously showing you a milk carton lantern - see post here.

I decided to make a bigger slightly different version which again like the previous is safe. There are a lot of steps to this tutorial but once you get the hang of it, its super easy!

Apart from decor this would also look so sweet in a child's room! You could make them as tall or as short as you would like.

Now let's get on with the tutorial, keep reading to find out more!

Steps:

1) To create the base you will need to cut some card stock to 9 3/8" x 1 1/2". First score on the short side at 1" and then on the long at 2 1/4", 4 1/2". 6 3/4" and 9". It should look like the picture below. Fold and burnish your scorelines

2) To create the 'legs' you need to take some form of decorative label punch and use the top half to punch out the shape. You need to get it as in the middle as possible on the four bigger rectangles. Repeat this on all four

Use the first one as a guide for the rest

3) Cut off the small square on the top corner and then cut into the sides of all the smaller rectangles

4) Place some sticky strip on the on the small tab and fold in half to seal

5) To finish the base place some stick strip on the edges of two tabs opposite each other. Fold them down and then fold over the other two and stick down. Try and keep it as square as possible

6) You will now need to cut a piece of vellum to 9 3/8" x 6 1/2". I used some from a Maggie Holmes collection, you could also use plain vellum then stamp on it. Score on the short side at 1/2" then on the long at 2 1/4", 4 1/2", 6 3/4" and 9". Fold and burnish your scorelines gently. Don't use a bone folder for this

7) Again you will need to cut off to small rectangle on the bottom corner and then also cut into the smaller rectangles on the bottom

8) Place some sticky strip on the tab over where you removed the smaller rectangle. Fold in half to seal

9) Just as you did with the base seal the four small tabs together

10) Cut one piece of card stock, the small as the base, and one piece of vellum to make 2 1/8" squares

11) Stick the card stock square to the inside of the base

12) Stick your vellum piece from step 10 to your base. Match up the seams where two sides meet. Carefully put your vellum square on the inside. I didn't find the need to stick this down

13) To make the top of your lantern cut another piece of card stock to 1 3/4" x 9 3/8". Score on the long side at 2 1/4". 4 1/2". 6 3/4" and 9 1/8". You will then need to move your card stock over 1/16" to the right - so the score lines you just made match up to the raised notch right next to the score mark. You will then need to score again at 2 1/4", 4 1/2" and 6 3/4". All you are doing here is creating thicker score lines. This will just made it fold better to go around your lantern. You then need to score on the short side at 5/8". Be sure to turn your card 90 degrees clockwise

14) Fold your score lines just with your fingers. Using a border punch, punch out a pattern on the thicker side

15) Again you will need to cut off the small rectangle. Then place some sticky strip above and below then 5/8" scoreline. Cut into the sides of all four of your smaller rectangles and notch in slightly on the both sides. I would recommend doing this after you put your sticky strip on

16) Stick the smaller tab sticking out on the top of the lantern where you your seam is. You will need to line up the score line with the top of the vellum. Carefully start peeling off the sticky strip below the score line and stick on one side at the time. Then fold down each tab one at a time

17) Put a faux tea light inside your lantern then that's it!

I really hope you enjoyed this tutorial. I absolutely love how it turned out and I can't wait to keep making more. I don't like the idea of having candles around my house as my grandchildren are still very little!
